FAQs

General

Can I use my CUBE™ on the beach?

The CUBE™ is a great picnic BBQ, but please always use caution. The BBQ has a heat-protective shield on the underside, but if this area becomes blocked (by deep sand or long grass for example), the heat can't escape and may cause damage to your BBQ.

Always keep the underside of the BBQ clear of obstruction and never use it on a picnic rug or similar. If you're using your CUBE™ at the beach, always dispose of used coals responsibly.™

Can I use my CUBE™ on a table?

If the right amount of charcoal is used, and the underside of the BBQ is clear, you may use your CUBE™ on tables that can withstand heat of 80 degrees C above the current ambient temperature. However, we always recommend placing a stone plate or similar heat protection under the BBQ to be safe.

Can the handles be used for moving the BBQ while the CUBE™ is in use

The handles have been designed to minimise heat transfer. However, as charcoal is extremely hot, please select a suitable location before cooking, and try not to move the BBQ until the charcoal has cooled. Never grab the outer body when in use and always try to wear heat resistant gloves during cooking.

How do I remove the hot coals when I am done?

Always dispose of hot coals responsibly. Never leave them in sand on the beach, grass or in public bins. We always recommend waiting until the coals have completely cooled, and placing any leftover ash in a galvanised bucket or tin. Always take care when handling hot ash.

Will the HUB™, HUB™ II, FUSION™, and CUBE™ work in a cold climate and is there sufficient heat retention?

The HUB™, HUB™ II, FUSION™, and CUBE™ are charcoal fired and require some charcoal management. However, they produce superior flavour and amazing heat. The HUB™, HUB™ II and FUSION™ also have built-in rotisserie capabilities. The heat will hold, unless you're barbequing in a wind tunnel. You may want to consider the location of the BBQ to assist in reducing the impact of the natural elements and further improve the efficiency of your charcoal BBQ.

Cleaning & maintenance

How often do you recommend cleaning the BBQ?

The CUBE™ should be cleaned after each use. Please remember to only use warm soapy water, not harsh chemicals that may damage the product.

Where should I store the CUBE™ when not in use?

We recommend using a CUBE™ travel bag for storing when not in use. Any storage area should be dry and protected from the elements.

How do I clean my BBQ grill plates?

Soap and water with a scotch pad or steel wool will work. For stubborn grime, soak the plates in a bucket of warm, soapy water then scrub with a suitable brush. Repeat until clean. Just make sure you clean along the grill and not across it.

Can I use phosphoric based cleaning solution on my grills?

Do not use phosphoric based cleaners as the grills are cast iron with a vitreous enamel coating. Vitreous enamel, also called porcelain enamel, is a material made by fusing powdered glass to a substrate by firing, usually between 750 and 850C (1,380 and 1,560F). The powder melts, flows, and then hardens to a smooth, durable vitreous coating. If your porcelain grill grates are really dirty, you can try applying a baking soda solution to them. Make a paste by combining ½ cup (90 g) of baking soda with 1⁄4 cup (59 ml) of warm water. Apply the paste to the grill grates. Let it sit for 20 minutes and then clean it off with a soft bristle grill brush. Make sure you get all of the paste off before you cook anything on the grill, and clean the brush when you’re done. You could remove the grates and let the solution soak overnight, if necessary, in a sink or tub. Rinse the solution off, then replace the grates and clean them with a grill brush.

Do you empty the tray after each cook and use fresh charcoal each time or do you put them in a hot coal bin, then use a mix of new and old charcoal for the next cook?

You should definitely empty the tray and use fresh charcoal each time. Don't empty the night you cook as they will still be hot. Let it burn itself out and then just use a dustpan and brush to scoop the small amount of dust that's left into the bin the next day.

Best ways to cool down and safely dispose of the BBQ coal once used?

Coal/ash can take a very long time to cool (up to a day or so). Do not rush the process of removing the coals. It will depend on how much coal you have used as to when it will be cool. Once cooled, you can remove the used coals into a metal bucket with lid. You can put these remaining ash onto the garden or dispose of in the bin.

Cooking tips

What type of charcoal can I use?

The CUBE™ can be used with either Everdure by Heston Blumenthal natural lump charcoal or briquettes. Please see user manual for the maximum amount of coal to use.

How can I light the charcoal?

Charcoal can be lit by placing a small firelighter underneath the charcoal rack. We recommend natural firelighters (such as compressed wood cubes that do not contain chemicals).

How do I avoid burning on the outer ends and simmering towards to middle when cooking?

For even cooking you will need to spread the charcoals in an even layer
