FAQs

Cooking tips

When should I add the pizza stone when cooking on the 4K?

Do not add the pizza stone/heat deflector on the startup. Adding this too early will delay the ignition process and obstruct the natural heat rise. Trapped heat may also result in product damage and/or intermittent failure. When the charcoal is first ignited, keep the hood open for 10-15mins to aid with ignition. After this, close the hood and allow the 4K to reach your desired temperature before placing the pizza stone/heat deflector onto the grills.

Why is the charcoal taking a long time to ignite?

Ensure that your fuel is always kept in a dry place. Damp fuel can take a long time to ignite. We recommend natural lump charcoal for best results. Whilst briquettes can be used, they may take longer to ignite due to the noncombustible materials contained inside the fuel.

Can I use wood in the 4K?

Yes, but we recommend small wood chunks or chips. Large pieces of wood will result in overheating and spoilt food.

How much charcoal do I need for 3-4 hours roasting?

Not a lot thanks to the thermal insulation properties of this product – its super-efficient to run. Depending on the type of charcoal used and of course, the local weather conditions, about 150- 200GRAMS of coal per hour is all that is required to keep a great roasting temperature.

How do I cook bread in the 4K?

As a guide, oven temperature should be between 180-200°C and the probe temperature should be around 90°C. Set the probes for a few degrees lower than you need, to cover the residual cooking when you remove it. Give a tap on the bottom, if the loaf is light and sounds hollow, all is good.

What type of charcoal should I use?

For optimum performance, we recommend Everdure by Heston Blumenthal natural lump charcoal. The Fast Flame Ignition System can light briquettes at the press of a button, but due to the large variances in ingredients used by different manufacturers, we cannot guarantee their ignition time.

Why does the temperature decrease after I put the pizza stone in the 4K and how do it get it back up to the desired temperature?

For even cooking you will need to spread the charcoals in an even layer.

Thinking about doing a lamb leg in the 4K on the weekend. Is it better to cook it low and slow or at a normal temperature?

Long slow 150°c for 4-5 hours and some smoker chips here and there

Smoking a 4kg pork leg in the 4K today at 165c, not a slow cook. What internal temperature do you recommend to pull it out or do we wrap and leave it in, then pull it out?

Roast the leg until the temperature in the core/center reaches 65°c. You could go to 70°c but no higher!

Can I use an extension cord?

Yes, the retractable 10amp power cord can be connected to an outdoor extension cord. Please do not use an indoor extension cord. Extension cords that do not exceed 10m in length may be used – Always check the condition of the cord before use – Never use an extension cord in the rain – The extension cord must be outdoor rated (12-15 A) and approved

Is there a guide to assist me in cooking with the 4K?

Yes, you can click here to download How to Cook on the 4K, Tips & Guide

What are the electrical safety recommendations for the 4K?

Avoid leaving your appliance uncovered. Continuous exposure to rain, snow or high humidity may lead to premature deterioration and product failure. – Regular cleaning and maintenance will help keep your appliance in great working order.

What grills come with the 4K?

2 x #304 stainless steel grills and 2 x porcelain enamel cast iron grills.

The display is difficult to read in the sunlight, what do I do?

The 4K should not be used in direct sunlight. The display screen is fitted with antiglare (frosted) glass. We recommend positioning the 4K into a shaded are, protected from wind and rain. We recommend downloading the app which will relay the product data to your device via bluetooth.

What is the cooking size?

The cooking diameter is 46cm but most people want to also know the cooking area. Cast iron x 2 + s/s x 2 (total 4-piece grill cooking area)Total cooking area= 277088 (mm2) = 429.5 (sq.in)

How much power does it use?

1400W for less than 10 mins (ignition) and very low wattage thereafter.

Any other accessories included in the box?

Yes, a 33cm cordierite pizza stone, water container, charcoal tongs and a grill grabber all come as standard.

Technology & features

Where can I get a user guide for the app?

You can click here to Download App User Guide

What is 'Sleep Mode' and why does it happen?

If the oven temperature remains unchanged for 5 mins, the display will go into energy saving mode or rather; ‘Sleep Mode’. This can occur for two reasons: Reason 1: If the product is in use for many hours at a super stable low n slow temperature, the continuous display of the same information is a waste of energy. Reason 2: If the user accidentally switches it on, it will go to sleep mode again if the temperature does not change.

How do I avoid or bring the 4K out of sleep mode?

Any fluctuation in the oven temperature will bring the 4K out of sleep mode automatically, but you can avoid or bring the 4K out of sleep mode manually by connecting to the product via Bluetooth® or setting a timer.

Is data lost during sleep mode?

No. Data will still run in the background (such as current temperature, time).

How does it know the temperature of the oven and the food?

The 4K has 2 x ambient probes in the hood and 4 removable food probes.

How is it cool-to-touch?

The product is cool-to-touch on the outerbody and stand (excluding top vent area) due to a doublewalled construction and heat insulation protection material. The 4K is cool to touch up to a max. working temp of around 220°C with the hood down.

What are the charcoal tongs and side door for?

Rather than having to open and close the hood to reload fuel, we developed a system that allows the user to add coal or chips to the firebox via the side wall. This allows heat to remain and the user does not need to ‘stop cooking’ during reload.

Ignition

Is this a BBQ or a smoker?

Its both. And more. The 4K can do everything your oven can and then some. Combining state of the art technology and only the finest materials, the 4K can low ‘n’ slow cook, roast, open grill and even perform like a pizza oven at a high heat range.

Should I use an accelerant to start the coals?

No, you do not need to use an accelerant or coals with an accelerant included.

Best ways to cool down and safely dispose of the BBQ coal once used?

Coal/ash can take a very long time to cool (up to a day or so). Do not rush the process of removing the coals. It will depend on how much coal you have used as to when it will be cool. Once cooled, you can remove the used coals into a metal bucket with lid. You can put these remaining ash onto the garden or dispose of in the bin.

Do I leave the hood opened or closed when igniting the charcoal?

1) In regards to closing the hood or leaving the hood open during ignition, both ways will still ignite the charcoal. We would however suggest leaving the hood open for a quicker ignition to the charcoal, as well as opening the vents to position 6. The more oxygen that gets to the charcoal when igniting, the better. You may also notice that the charcoal is fully ignited prior to the 7mins, you can then manually stop the element by pressing and holding the ignition button until it beeps. Once the charcoal is lit, keep the lower vent fully open and close the top vent down to position 2 or 3 to help heat the 4K up to the desired temperature. 2) In the instance where temperature is dropping, we would recommend adding a few more pieces of charcoal through the side loader, and then opening the lower vent up to position 6 to allow the new charcoal to ignite and raise the temperature back up again. This may take 10 minutes or so, depending on the size of charcoal added and cooking temperature desired. Be mindful not to overload the charcoal. You can always add more charcoal but it is harder to cool it down if you have added too much.

How much electricity does the 4K use?

The 4K runs at 6amps for 7 minutes which is very minimal. 1400W for less than 10 mins (ignition) and very low wattage thereafter

Cleaning

How do I clean my 4K?

Just a ball of steel wool and some elbow grease for the inside. Warm soapy water and a soft cloth for the outside. Spray grills with canola oil before use and the grime will just wipe off.

Are the probes washable?

Yes. but we do not recommend putting them into a dishwasher.

How do I clean the probes on my 4K?

BBQ probes are not water resistant, so please do not submerge them in water. Wipe clean with a dry clean cloth or use warm soapy water and a scourer if it requires extra cleaning. Do not put in the dishwasher.

Do you empty the tray after each cook and use fresh charcoal each time or do you put them in a hot coal bin, then use a mix of new and old charcoal for the next cook?

You should definitely empty the tray and use fresh charcoal each time. Don’t empty the night you cook as they will still be hot. Let it burn itself out and then just use a dustpan and brush to scoop the small amount of dust that’s left into the bin the next day.

How can I clean below the burners/ ignition?

Warm soapy water is fine but you can also dissolve a dishwasher tablet in warm water and then use that to dissolve the grease and fat.

How do you clean the charcoal tray?

Remove any debris that has ended up in the tray. When it is empty, use warm soapy water or dishwashing liquid to dissolve grease and fat.

Is the pizza stone dishwasher safe?

Technically yes. However, the material is porous so if washing liquid gets trapped you may have a soapy tasting pizza. We recommend a hard brush and some warm water.

Can I use phosphoric based cleaning solution on my grills?

Do not use phosphoric based cleaners as the grills are cast iron with a vitreous enamel coating. Vitreous enamel, also called porcelain enamel, is a material made by fusing powdered glass to a substrate by firing, usually between 750 and 850°C (1,380 and 1,560°F). The powder melts, flows, and then hardens to a smooth, durable vitreous coating. If your porcelain grill grates are really dirty, you can try applying a baking soda solution to them. Make a paste by combining 1/2 cup (90 g) of baking soda with 1/4 cup (59 ml) of warm water. Apply the paste to the grill grates. Let it sit for 20 minutes and then clean it off with a soft bristle grill brush. Make sure you get all of the paste off before you cook anything on the grill, and clean the brush when you’re done. You could remove the grates and let the solution soak overnight, if necessary, in a sink or tub. Rinse the solution off, then replace the grates and clean them with a grill brush.

How do I clean my BBQ grill plates?

Soap and water with a scotch pad or steel wool will work. For stubborn grime, soak the plates in a bucket of warm, soapy water then scrub with a suitable brush. Repeat until clean. Just make sure you clean along the grill and not across it.

Maintenance

How to I remove the staining or corrosion on the 4K air vent?

The airvent is made of alloy, therefore we would suggest using an alloy polish.

Why is the paint peeling inside my BBQ?

There are a few possible causes: Something may have burnt onto the base and has been scrubbed off to clean it. As an example, marinades have a high sugar content and when in a localised spot they can ignite and have a higher burning temperature. A corrosive cleaner used for cleaning the grill plates that may have dripped on to the base • Manufacturing Рit may have been caused by contamination of the aluminium which was not visible when painting the base of the product. This may have prevented the paint adhering to the alloy. During the Q.A inspection the paint would have passed as there would not have been any indication of the contamination. Depending on the severity of the paint removal, you may wish to try using a heat resistant paint to cover the exposed spot. Alternatively, please contact our customer service team, who will assist you further.

Will the cover keep my BBQ dry?

Our BBQ covers, are waterproof and are made of 425 GSM with a waterproof lining. Please be aware that you can get humidity and condensation forming between the cover and the BBQ depending on your climate and location.
